mVENewsletter Week #2: RLCS Season X - Fall: NA event 2 Sunday Main Stream Recap

Hey guys! I know there's probably not many if any, people waiting for this weekly RLCS rundown but nonetheless I was going to try and get a mid-day friday upload to test the numbers but my real-life job came in the way, but next week I'm hoping for a Wednesday wrap-up of the NA finals this weekend. If anybody is reading this week in and week out just know I really appreciate you and trying to get/be better. For updates please follow me on twitter! @maachV now on with the recap...

Game 1: Susquehanna Soniqs vs. Alpine esports

Game 1 starts with a lot of offensive pressure from the Soniqs, with the boost stealing to keep them in the offensive zone. They create many shot opportunities through passing, but the Alpine defense has thwarted everything. Majicbear gets the opening goal off a transition play left the Soniqs net exposed, leaving Alpine up 1-0 and looking great defensively. With just 15 seconds left in the game, the Soniqs get a little too pre-emptive with their breakout and get caught by Jordan to put Alpine in a comfortable, and eventually game-winning 2-0 lead. Even though the Soniqs controlled the ball for most of the game, Alpine was able to capitalize on defensive mistakes much better than the Soniqs where. The Soniqs need to either stop playing for 50/50's in their own end or keep someone closer to the net if things go wrong because clearly they can and will. Alpine never looked too uncomfortable in the net, so hopefully, they can keep up the momentum.

A minute into game 2 and majicbear clears the ball off the wall, and jruss jumps to hit the ball, and he accidentally own goals from roughly midfield. Soniqs really need to pull it together as they keep making mistakes that make it seem like they may be playing tilted. Alpine seems more in offensive control this game, as Jordan carries the ball in front of the net before percy hits a double-tap against the backboard to put Alpine up 2-0 again. 2-0 would be all they need, again, in game 2 as they take a commanding 2-0 series lead and looking for the clean sweep against the Soniqs. Soniqs having a relatively disappointing first two games, and I'm greatly hoping they can pull it around to make this a series.

Alpine opens the scoring in game 3, this time its Jordan 30 seconds into the game, getting an excellent 50/50 and then reading the ball off the wall to get it past Satthew. Soniqs are finally able to put on a good shot, and it goes in! They tie it up 1-1 and finally look like they may have awoken, but it's not long before majicbear gives Alpine the lead again with a perfect shot off the pass from percy. Alpine then give themselves a 3-1 lead not too long after, with percy and Jordan communicating for the excellent passing play off the face-off bounce. The last 3 minutes is almost all Soniqs, though, as Shock puts a shot just under the crossbar to put them down 3-2, then with 1:51 left, Satthew takes advantage of Jordan not defensively challenging and just puts it over him to tie it up 3-3. As look Alpine looks slightly more panicked on defense, Soniqs finally start putting effective shots on net as they take the lead with a minute left and hold on the 4-3 win and to prevent the series sweep. Soniqs over tripled Alpine's shots as they just started getting better shots towards the end of the game, which finally started to pay off as they look to keep up the teamwork to get the shots they need.

Soniqs start the game off with pressure, which is countered by some soft defense by Alpine. That leads to the Soniqs picking up a 1-0 lead 30 seconds into game 4. Soniqs don't let up and continue the pressure until Shock takes advantage of jruss disrupting the defense to put them up 2-0 with 4:07 to play. Alpine looks like they may be falling apart, but it is early into the game. Alpine can finally get some offensive opportunities, which leads to percy getting a fantastic side-wall read to give Alpine a goal and some hope. The hope ends up not being enough as the Soniqs defense holds the 2-1 lead to tie the series up 2-2 and take this to a game 5. Soniqs look very confident with their ability to get the reverse sweep, and they are out-pacing a speedy team in Alpine, which seems to be throwing Alpine off quite a bit. With momentum in their favor, we will have to see who can finish in game 5.

To Champions Field as game 5 starts with both teams exchanging opportunities, but the Soniqs capitalize on the Alpine defensive rotations and get a goal for the 1-0 lead with 3:58 remaining. Alpine are able to put on the pressure as the game came to a close as Jordan plays the ball beautifully and plays it off the ground to tie the game up 1-1, which lasts the rest of the game time as we head to overtime. The Soniqs pick up some momentum after some good defensive plays to open overtime before jruss ends the game and series, +1:18 into overtime after a couple of shots in a row cause Alpines defense to scramble. Soniqs are looking very strong and looking to qualify for stage 2 with no problems, as Alpine looks to bounce back in their next matchup.

MVP of the match: Satthew

Game 2: NRG esports vs. Omelette

NRG is coming out of the gates hot as they put a lot of pressure on the Omelette’s defense in the first minute. Things start to even out as Omelette starts getting better clears and gaining some more ball control before a poor double commit on defense for LionBlaze, and Luke gets punished by jstn for the 1-0 NRG lead. The lead lasts a total of 3 in-game seconds as Luke receives a friendly bounce off the face-off and carries the ball over Squishy to tie it up 1-1. With just under a minute left, GarrettG tips the ball to Squishy, who just tips it to the top corner on the transition for the 2-1 lead. NRG then plays some solid defense for the last minute to hold onto the 2-1 victory in game 1. Both teams looking pretty even; it may genuinely just come down to who makes the most mistakes, as NRG holds a 1-0 series lead going into game 2.

Omelette opens up the scoring in game 2 as both teams look like they are playing confused for the first 30 seconds, leads to a clean LionBlaze shot, 1-0 for Omelette. Both teams go back and forth, trying to set-up some long-winded passing plays which aren’t always resulting in shots before NRG can kick it back up with a transition play that leads to a GarrettG goal to tie things up 1-1. After the goal, NRG goes back to not getting many shots as this game heads to overtime. NRG seems to, again, pick it back up in overtime, but every good opportunity either gets saved by Omelette or just hits the post. Squishy can finally get a clean shot on net, off a pass from GarrettG onto the open net to win it after +3:52. NRG doesn’t seem to want to capitalize on their opportunities, as any good shot attempt sees them trying to make an unnecessary flick or pass to get the great play, instead of the effective one. Regardless they hold a 2-0 series lead and look to cap it off with a sweep in game 3.

Omelette opens the scoring again in game 3 as Luke perfectly 1v3’s the entire NRG defense for the beautiful solo play. This seems to finally fully flick the on-switch for NRG as they respond with a beautiful transition play with Squishy demoing the goalie and jstn Musty flicking it for the 1-1 tie. NRG doesn’t just stop at one, though, as jstn and GarrettG dismantle the Omelette defense for a GarrettG goal to put them in a 2-1 lead they won’t need to look back from. They hold the 2-1 lead until the last minute when Omelette’s aggressive offense tries to tie it up, leads to more NRG transition goals as GarrettG and jstn can score and give NRG a 4-1 victory and the 3-0 series sweep over Omelette. Omelette holds on well for pretty much every game; they just couldn’t match the pace of NRG, which lead to more transition opportunities which left Omelette’s defense exposed. NRG moves up to play the Soniqs, who are both 2-0 in group B so far.

MVP of the match: GarrettG

Game 3: Susquehanna Soniqs vs. NRG esports

Both teams open game 1 up with some feeling out possessions, not really getting effective shots more just seeing how the defense might react to different things. NRG's pace looks unmatched again as Squishy steals the ball off the wall on the transition to get the opening goal, 1-0 NRG. NRG keep the pressure up for the entire game, but 1-0 is all they would get, and need for the victory in game 1. The Soniqs defense looked good, but if you are playing almost the whole game on defense, it's hard to get any good shot opportunities. Soniqs had three shots all game, with all three coming from jruss, compared to NRG with nine team shots being led by Squishy's 4 shots. NRG thrives on being in control of the boosts and the ball, and if they can keep a stranglehold on both of those, this series may end up like the last NRG series.

Thirty seconds into game 2, jruss takes the ball down the left side and pops it up towards the net before following it beautifully and dunking it over Squishy. It only takes 20 seconds for GarrettG to show that NRG's shooting is much better than against Omelette earlier as he put the ball in the top corner to tie it up 1-1. Jstn then reads Squishy's air dribble to get the follow-up shot and places it perfectly past the Soniqs defense as NRG has taken control of the game. The Soniqs defense looks to be falling apart in game 2 as GarrettG capitalizes on a soft clear from Soniqs to get a clean shot on net for the 3-1 lead. NRG doesn't feel comfortable keeping it that close as Squishy puts one in bar down for good measure before Soniqs can finally get a couple of successful clears and ease the pressure, but they still fall 4-1 in game 2. All around uncomfortable looking game for Soniqs, with even their offensive chances making them look passive. Hopefully, they can turn it on and make it a more exciting series.

Game 3 opens up with another jruss goal, this time off the backboard pass from Satthew. Soniqs get some more shot attempt, but the NRG challenges on every clear just seem only to be going NRG's way. NRG is finally able to tie it up with 2 minutes left in the game after Squishy puts a well-placed shot right under the jumping goalie. NRG's pressure continues to create chaos for Soniqs as the defense gets confused and wastes boost, chasing the ball around before squishy gives himself a pass to put NRG up 2-1. NRG holds the 2-1 lead for the last minute to complete the series sweep over the Soniqs. NRG looked much more comfortable for the entirety of this game compared to their previous against Omelette, but at the same time, the Soniqs did not show their A-game and got their mistakes capitalized on.

MVP of the match: Squishy

Game 4: Nefarious vs. Team Envy

Nefarious is looking to prove something against Envy, a consistent top 8 NA team. They show their dominance by taking 20 seconds for Atomic to put Envy up 1-0 with some defensive bumping by Tubropolsa. Nefarious, though, get some offensive pressure right after which causes some confusion for the Envy defense and leads to Ahduhm tieing it up 1-1. They keep the pressure going as Buddy sends the ball from midfield into the Envy end before Ahduhm jumps from the other side of the field to perfectly redirect it into the net for a beautiful goal. Nefarious lead 2-1. Nefarious does not slow down with the pressure as they get good shots, and then disrupt the defense with bumps and demos, leading to Ahduhm going, as the caster Jorby put it, “bulldozer mode” and JWismont getting a clean goal for the 3-1 lead. Envy is able to respond with 40 seconds left after Turbopolsa goes post-and-in, but 3-2 would be all Nefarious needs as they shock Envy and take game 1. Envy looks a little shocked at the speed of Nefarious, but hopefully, they can bounce back and gain some momentum for game 2.

The first minute and a half have Nefarious dominating the offensive end, just not allowing Envy any clears at all. Then though, Envy regains their footing, and we see both teams get some offensive possessions. The first goal of the game comes with 2 minutes left to go as JWismont puts a shot on net but positions his car to counter the save to dunk it into the net for the 1-0 Nefarious lead. Envy responds with a minute and a half left to go as Atomic capitalizes on mist demoing the defender back to tie the game up 1-1. Both teams continue the back and forth before we head to overtime. Team Envy holds most of the pressure in overtime. Still, the defensive abilities of Nefarious keep saving their hopes before a lucky pinch between JWismont and Atomic gives Nefarious the 2-1 overtime win +3:03 into the extra frame. Nefarious defense is playing unreal, and their transition offense is capitalizing enough to provide them with these solid wins against Envy to take a 2-0 series lead. Envy needs to pull their team together if they are going to reverse sweep this series, or at least avoid the sweep themselves.

Envy starts off game 4 where they left off in game 3, putting up a lot of pressure against the Nefarious defense. Envy takes advantage of none of the Nefarious defenders going for a clear and passes to Turbopolsa, who puts Envy up 1-0. Envy keeps a hold of the pressure to keep their lead, and it pays off with Turbopolsa putting them up 2-0 with just under 2 minutes left to go in the game. Then to finish off the sweep hopes, Turbopolsa completes the hat-trick, and mist picks one up for good measure to give Envy the 4-0 game 3 win. Envy survives the sweep, but they will have to keep up this pressure for two more games against Nefarious, which has been proven to be a challenging task. Nefarious did not have as good of a game defensively as game 2, but they may have gotten carried away with the hopes of a sweep, which led to them pulling their defense up for offensive chances more often.

It takes 2 minutes of more back and forth before Nefarious opens up the scoring with Ahduhm getting a wonderfully weird angle off the wall to sneak it past a clumped Envy defense. Nefarious put the pressure on Envy as a Crossfield pass gets put top corner by JWismont to give them a 2-0 lead and to put the pressure on Envy. Mist takes just 20 seconds to respond with a bar down shot of his own, and Envy is starting to come alive again. Envy takes control of the ball and makes Nefarious uncomfortable on the transition to get an easy shot on an open net to tie the game up 2-2! That means this game is headed to overtime. After some back and forth opportunities, Nefarious clears the ball, and it takes a friendly bounce off the corner, which the Envy defenders don’t expect and miss in a panic. This leads to a wide-open easy goal for JWismont to put the series away 3-1 and move Nefarious on to Round 2 of the 2nd NA regional. This game was shocking, I didn’t expect to see this much dominance from Nefarious, but I am here for it. Envy didn’t look terrible, but they just seemed to be outplayed by Nefarious, its truly that simple.

MVP of the match: Ahduhm

Game 5: Alpine esports vs. Pittsburgh Knights

These are two very evenly matched teams, as this match could be essentially A coin flip of who is feeling good for 3 games. Jordan dribbles it passed two defenders before netting the first goal 30 seconds in, and Alpine leads 1-0. Both teams trading clears and shot attempts for a lot of the game before Knights grab some momentum with a tying goal from Radoko to make it 1-1 with a minute left to go. This game looks like it will head to overtime before the Knights catch Alpine off guard on the transition, and ZPS puts it into the open net. Knights will hold on for the last 30 seconds as they take game 1 2-1. A very back and forth game 1 leaves me hopeful that this series will be very even, unlike some other matchups from this week.

Both teams keep up the back and forth pressure in game 2. Some good shots, but both teams are playing solid defense and are getting back well in the transition, meanwhile on offense, it seems like nobody can finish up on shots. Some regrettable events lead to Knights getting the first goal after majicbear and kinseh pinch the ball beside the Knights net, and it rolls all the way downfield and into the net for  1-0 Knights lead. Alpine gets it together offensively as majicbear hits a shot off the post and reacts fast enough to get the rebound and tie it up with under a minute to go. This game heads to overtime as the 1-1 tie cant be settled in 5 minutes. +1:20 into overtime, Jordan takes advantage of the Knights' defensive confusion to hit the flip reset and give Alpine the 2-1 overtime win. A very similar game to game 1; it just happens to go the other way. Both teams look to be in a dead heat, so it would not shock me to see a game 5 here.

Alpine comes out of the gates swinging in game 3 after Jordan gets an insane touch to pass it to majicbear just 10 seconds in, Alpine lead 1-0. Alpine is getting the better shot attempts, but the Knights are keeping stable on defense until they can try and reset things to make more comfortable. Knights get a shot attempt, and it's immediately capitalized by percy, who takes it in transition passed the remaining two players to put Alpine up 2-0. Alpine can keep the pressure up the rest of the game but cannot net another as they take the 2-1 series lead with a 2-0 victory here in game 3. Alpine looks like they might have taken a little bit of control, but the Knights defense was what kept it 2-0. Hopefully, their defense can get some better clears for some good shot opportunities akin to this game's end.

Game 4 goes back to the back and forth pressure from the earlier games; even though Alpine gets some good shots, Knights are always in net. The game remains scoreless even as the Knights start to get good shot attempts of their own, with it looking like it may come down to a 0-0 overtime before radoko gets a Crossfield pass to kinseh, and then turns upfield to demo the goalie to guarantee the 1-0 lead with a minute left to play. Knights are able to hold the 1-0 lead to force this series to go to a game 5. Both teams again looked very even, so it will be tough to tell who will come out on top in game 5. The knights get the slight edge because of momentum, but Alpine does not look like they have slowed down over the past game or two.

Alpine opens it up quickly with a good read from percy, leads to a pass to Jordan for the 1-0 goal just 20 seconds in. After some more pressure, majicbear gets a demo that leaves him in the perfect position to pass it out in front for Jordan; Alpine leads 2-0. The Knights won't go out without a fight, though, as they start to put the pressure on as the game continues, getting some effective shots but so far unable to capitalize. The pressure finally pays off as they transition the ball downfield, and radoko can set-up kinseh with a perfect shot, leaving 38 seconds for the Knights to tie it up. A nail-biting last 30 seconds ends with Alpine holding on for the 2-1 win, and the 3-2 series win to move on to stage 2. This was easily my favorite game of the day so far as both teams had close games for a whole 5 games. Hopefully, the Knights can get the win to move on to stage 2.

MVP of the match: Jordan

Game 6: Team Envy vs. Omelette

Envy is looking to bounce back after that disappointing loss to Nefarious. They look ready to bounce back as Atomic carries the ball downfield for the opening goal of game 1. Envy looks to be causing some havoc along the Omelette defensive end, as every shot attempt has a defender being bumped or attempted to bump somewhere on the field. Omelette is able to pick up the pace and get some good ball control, but mist launches the ball off the wall near midfield to catch Omelette off guard for the 2-0 Envy lead. Omelette is able to capitalize on some poor clear attempts from Envy as the game is 2-1 with 1:30 left to go. Turbopolsa takes the Envy lead back up to two goals with a missed offensive possession from Omelette, leading to an easy transition goal. Not too long after, mist rolls his car around to angle a shot to put Envy up 4-1, and they hold off for the last minute to win game 1. Envy looked fantastic on offense, but when it came to defensive pressure, that's when you can see them start to stretch out for saves and get a little discombobulated. Nonetheless, they lead 1-0 and take some good momentum into game 2.

Some early pressure in game 2 from Envy is thwarted by Omelette's defense, who get some shot attempts of their own of their clears. This game does go 5 minutes scoreless, though, as we head to a 0-0 overtime. Just +0:32 into overtime, we see the first detrimental defensive error from Envy as two players get caught up in the net, and Luke takes advantage to tie up the series 1-1. That game saw Envy mostly controlling the pressure, but the Knights are showing up and showing out on defense. We will have to see if Envy can come back stronger for game 3, like game 1.

Mist scores just 30 seconds in with two beautiful contests in a row leaves the ball squirting out right into the net. Less than 30 seconds later and Envy put another goal up with Atomic reading a long backboard pass from mist to make it 2-0 Envy. LionBlaze goes to play a ball out of his corner, and it bounces awkwardly over him and right to Turbopolsa, who just casually dumps it in to make it 3-0 and make it look easy. Omelette is finally able to stop the bleeding and reply with a goal of their own to cut the lead to 3-1. After that goal, Omelette looks to be in full control, just suffocating Envy in the defensive end, and with 2 minutes left to go, Luke scores again to make the lead only 3-2. Envy would take a deep breath and hold on to win game 3 3-2.  They hold a 2-1 series lead over Omelette and look to dominate game 4 like they did the first two minutes of this game, to secure their spot in stage 2. Omelette needs to quell the defensive mistakes if they want to gain the upper hand on Envy.

The back and forth pressure from both teams end when freshness reads LionBlaze's pass off the backboard to put Omelette up 1-0. Less than 20 seconds later, Envy set up a counter-attack that gets the defense all out of position until Turbopolsa can clean it up to tie it up 1-1. Envy gets the ball going across the net a couple of times before a second goal finally falls for Turbopolsa, to put Envy up 2-1. Omelette will not go out quietly, though, as Luke ties the game off a fantastic pass from LionBlaze with less than 30 seconds left to send the game to overtime. Overtime does not last long, though, as the face-off bounces Envy's way, and Atomic cleans it up in just +0:07 of overtime. Envy wins the series 3-1, and while some games were closer than expected, I think Envy is in a decent position for next weekend.

MVP of the match: Atomic

Game 7: Susquehanna Soniqs vs. Adept

Soniqs started the day at 2-0 and have fallen a little with 2 3-0 losses in a row to put them in a do or die game against Adept. Adept is not a relatively well-known team, outside of Comm, a mechanically gifted player who has made a name for himself in 1’s. Adept nets the first goal as Comm finishes off the offensive pressure to put them up 1-0. Both teams seem to be trading counter-attacks when the Soniqs are the more experienced team, so Adept came to play this weekend. One counter-attack leads to Comm attacking the defense of the Soniqs, causes Spyder to get an open net shot to put Adept up 2-0 in game 1. The teamwork and chemistry are looking great for Adept through game 1. Both teams keep the defense clean as Adept takes game 1 with a score of 2-0. Adept go up 1-0 in the series, and things are not looking good for the Soniqs as they haven’t even won a game since they won game 5 against Alpine. Hopefully, they can pick their offensive ability back up for game 2 because if they don’t wake up next game, I’m not sure if they will be able to.

Adept keeps momentum in game 2 as Pirates gets a fair shot attempt that gets redirected into the net by Spyder, who disrupted the defense in the Soniqs backline. Jruss is able to respond after an excellent save from Pirates leaves the net empty for Adept. A beautiful passing play from Adept gives Comm a great transition shot to put Adept back in the lead, 2-1. Jruss, again, ties things up as he reads a clear off the backboard to put it into the empty net and tie it up 2-2. Again, the offensive pressure from Adept discombobulates the Soniqs defense, and Pirates just dunks it on Satthew to regain the lead 3-2. This time Adept can add to the lead with Comm getting the solo play down the right side of the field to put it bar down passed the defense to make it 4-2. With 45 seconds remaining, the Soniqs finally hit some passes down the field and lead to just 4-3 with a Shock goal. Soniqs get a couple more chances, but Adept hold on for the 4-3 win and hold a 2-0 series lead over the Soniqs, threatening to lose their third sweep in a row. Soniqs need to pull their offense together if they want to try and come back and make this more of a series.

Soniqs look to start strong with a good transition shot, but Comm spawns from a demo at the last possible second to stretch and make the save.  Soniqs then find an excellent passing play down the field to get Shock a good goal and give them the early 1-0 lead. Soniqs look like they may have pulled the chemistry together as they look more coordinated on defense and offense. It lasts most of the game, though, as Spyder finds a right angle, and the rest of Adept find bumps on the defense to tie it up 1-1 with a minute left to go. Then with less than 30 seconds left, Comm goes 1v1 with Shock and puts it right over him so Spyder could get a wide-open shot to put Adept up 2-1 with little time remaining. Adept is just able to keep it together defensively and hold on to the 2-1 lead to sweep the Soniqs! Defense seems to be the Achilles heel for Soniqs as they became so uncomfortable and couldn’t make up for it on the offensive end. Nevertheless, Adept move onto Stage 2, and Soniqs get swept again and are eliminated from the 2nd NA regional.

MVP of the math: Comm

Game 8: 72 Pin Connector vs. Pittsburgh Knights

Radoko opens up the scoring in game 1 for the Knights just three in-game seconds after the face-off. The bounce comes perfectly out for him to get a clean shot and put Knights up 1-0. 72PC get some excellent opportunities to tie it up, but so far, nothing falls for them offensively. Momentum shifts back to the Knights as they lay som offensive pressure before kinseh gets the double-tap past a flustered defense to put the Knights up 2-0. 72PC cut the lead to 2-1 just ten seconds later, and the game is back to a close one. 72PC cannot get a tying goal, though, as the Knights hold on for the 4-1 game 1 win with radoko and kinseh getting the sealing goals with just under 30 seconds left. The knights looked strong out of the gates, dominating the boost game and leaving 72PC playing much slower.

The knights carry the momentum to game 2 as ZPS steals some boost and rotates to cherry-pick a little bit before getting the pass and slamming it down for a goal. 72PC are able to tie up after Wonder carries it down the field for the beautiful solo play, making it 1-1 as 72PC look to grab some momentum. Like the last game, the last minute is all Knights as they score three goals in that span to steal a 4-1 victory in game 2. While momentum might have swung around a bit during game 2, the last-minute showed it was never in doubt for the Knights players. They led the series 2-0 and looked to finish off stage 1 with a clean sweep.

Game 3 is a defensive game from both teams as 72PC couldn't get the offense started, but the Knights are still playing all around faster. Knights get a whiff on a clear which is caught by Jacob and spun around and into the net for a 1-0 lead that 72PC would be able to hold on to for the final 2 minutes as 72PC narrowly avoid the clean sweep. Clearly, defensive games can kind of favor 72PC, but the Knights didn't look bad last game at all; it's just that 72PC played up to how the Knights have been playing. If they can play two more games like this, it would make it a much more exciting series.

A minute into game 4 sees kinseh disrupt the backline and pick up the opening goal to give them a 1-0 lead. The Knights don't stop at just one as an onslaught of offensive pressure leaves 72PC with some defensive woes they didn't experience in other games. The Knights dominate and end up taking game 4 with a score of 6-0. Radoko ended with a hat-trick on five shots, as PK moves on to the second stage in some quite convincing fashion. I was hoping this game would end much closer and the Knights crushed my hopes as they looked purely on fire.

MVP of the match: ZPS
